San Juans Kayaking | 2 Day Overnight & Family Overnight Kayak Tours

The San Juan Islands are one of North America’s premier sea kayak destinations. Our 2-day Overnight and Family Overnight kayak tours highlight what makes sea kayakers and adventurers.
We offer a variety of 2-Day trips for our guests, and can customize any of these itineraries to accommodate special interests. Any of our 2-Day itineraries can also be conducted as a family specific tour for families with children between 6-12. These family trips allow us to focus on activities and destinations families and children will enjoy, without the pressure of keeping up with adult paddlers.
For more information on what sets us apart from other operators, please see the overnight tour information page. Available dates are listed on our schedule page.
2-Day Itinerary I
San Juan North-East: Point-to-Point Itinerary
Summary: This is our favorite itinerary for 2-Day trips because it is point-to-point. Departing from Friday Harbor and finishing at Roche Harbor means you’ll paddle some of the islands most beautiful waters, explore undeveloped shorelines and encounter lots of wildlife without ever retracing your steps. This tour also works well as a 3-Day San Juan North-East trip, and can also be operated as an Inn to Inn tour. Here are some of the highlights:
- Paddling 7-10 miles of undeveloped shoreline daily
- Paddle through the beautiful Wasp Island Chain
- Hike around the Nature Conservancy’s Yellow Island
- Encounter great variety of wildlife, both marine and terrestrial
- Camp at Jones Island State Park (our staff’s personal favorite)
- Possibility to paddle in the best Killer Whale Habitat, including the proposed Killer Whale Sanctuary on the West Side of San Juan and Henry Island
- Point-to-Point – New terrain every paddle stroke, from start to finish
- Free shuttle transportation pre/post trip
2-Day Itinerary II
San Juan Island North-West: Point-to-Point or Out and Back
Summary: This tour is a favorite for the Killer Whale Enthusiasts. While we feel the North-East trip provides a little more balanced trip, our San Juan North-West does provide a higher probability of seeing Killer Whales. This is due to the fact that when the Southern Resident Killer Whales are in our area, they are frequently spotted between the Haro Strait and Boundary Pass, which is where you’ll be paddling on both days, versus one day on Itinerary I. San Juan Outfitters is the only kayak company that operates a whale watch vessel in addition to kayak tours, which gives us a significant advantage over other companies with regard to spotting whales. All our guides are required to carry VHF radios and push-to-talk phones, which allows the Whale Watch crew to update them on potential whale sightings.
In addition to high probability of seeing whales, this tour makes camp on Stuart Island, considered one of the most beautiful of the San Juans. Here are some of the other highlights:
- Paddle around a cormorant rookery on Henry Island
- Paddle 7-10 miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline daily
- Hike out to Turn Point Light Station (a fantastic whale watching spot)
- Encounter great variety of wildlife, both marine and terrestrial
- Camp at Stuart Island State Park
- Paddle in the best Killer Whale habitat, including the proposed Killer Whale Sanctuary, on the West Side of San Juan and Henry Island
- Free shuttle transportation pre/post trip
