San Juan Outfitters’ Whale Sanctuary Tour is a premium day trip for guests with intermediate kayaking experience, or who are physically fit. This sea kayak tour is the only day tour in the San Juan Islands that is point-to-point (starts and finishes at different locations), and transects the proposed Orca Whale Sanctuary on the west side of San Juan Island.

This tour is designed to maximize wildlife sightings, including the Southern Resident Killer Whale population that frequents these waters in the summer months. Because this trip covers over 10 miles of killer whale habitat, it clearly gives you this best chance of seeing killer whales and other wildlife. These 10 miles cover a significant portion of the proposed “Killer Whale Sanctuary” along the west side of San Juan Island and Henry Island.

Our trip will begin either at Roche Harbor or San Juan County park, and finish at the other location, with our shuttle van providing transportation of guests and gear to and from San Juan County Park. This allows us to take advantage of the weather and currents, maximizes our chance to see wildlife, and means we don’t have to retrace our steps—exploring new areas the entire trip.

Our exclusive Roche Harbor location allows us to launch from a world class marina and be paddling by spectacular wildlife within minutes. The undeveloped west side of Henry Island is home to resident harbor seal colonies, multiple bald eagle nests, intertidal zones, a cormorant rookery and more. The deep waters surrounding Henry and San Juan Island are home to harbor porpoise, Dall’s porpoise, resident and transient killer whales, shore and diving birds, and occasionally some sea lions or other whales.

This trip departs at 11am and returns at 4pm, which means 4.75 hours are spent on the water, paddling anywhere from 10-15miles. In order to have a great experience and paddle comfortably, this trip is limited to guests with intermediate kayaking experience, or physically fit guests who are comfortable on the water. Lunch is not provided, so guests are encouraged to pack a picnic lunch, snacks and of course water bottles.
