    Family Overnight Kayak Trip

Many of our guides are professional educators with primary school experience and love working with children.  Our family friendly guides are just one way San Juan Outfitters sets itself apart in conducting the highest quality tours.

This is our favorite itinerary for a 2-day kayak camping trip for families.  This kayak tour departs from Friday Harbor and finishes at Roche Harbor, so you will always be paddling somewhere new. You will paddle some of the San Juan Islands' most beautiful waters and undeveloped shorelines.

This kayak route puts guests in waters where there is an abundance and diversity of wildlife.  Guests can expect to see harbor seals, porpoise, a variety of marine birds, eagles, and possibly orca and humpback whales.

This kayak route is designed for lots of optional stops and hikes with opportunities for exploring and tide-pooling.

    DAY 1

Meet at our private kayak docks in Friday Harbor at 9:00 am. This is where you will meet your guides. Gear will be placed in dry bags. Luggage will be checked to San Juan Outfitters staff. Kayaks are packed and launched by 10:00 am.

This tour heads north along the east side of San Juan Island. The land here is owned by the University of Washington Marine Laboratories, (locally called “The Labs”). This acreage is one of the largest undeveloped shorelines in all of San Juan County.

As we head north, the tour will cross San Juan Channel.  We will kayak through the semi-remote and beautiful Wasp Island Chain.  The Wasp Islands consist of some DNR (Department of Natural Resources) land, some state park land, and some private land. The Nature Conservancy also owns a small island in this area, called Yellow Island.

Yellow Island was named that for the proliferation of yellow flowers that bloom there in spring.  We visit Yellow Island for a short hike and interpretation by your guide and sometimes the caretaker of the island.   Lunch is usually enjoyed on one of the Wasp Islands.

The next stop is Jones Island State Park. It is located northeast of San Juan Island, and southwest of Orcas Island. This park is one of the lesser used, but more scenic parks in San Juan County.  Jones Island is also a great launching point for the second day of kayaking and offers great sunset views.

After setting up camp, you can explore the 188 acres and 25,000ft of shoreline by hiking some, or all, of the 4 mile trail.  Dinner is served around 6:30 pm followed by s’mores.

    DAY 2

Enjoy family friendly breakfast and morning coffee, which is usually served between 8 and 9 am.  Guides will discuss the itinerary for the day at this time.

After breaking down camp and packing kayaks, you will begin your paddle for Roche Harbor.  Along the way there will be opportunities to stop and explore the shoreline, tide-pool, and view seals, porpoise, many sea birds, and possibly even orca whales!

You will arrive at our private kayak docks in Roche Harbor between 2 and 4 pm.  San Juan Outfitters staff will have any luggage ready for you.
