Alexandra (Alex) F

1st Season - According to her parents, since the day Alex could talk, she has had a passion for nonhuman animals. She has a particular interest in marine mammals and anything else that calls the ocean home. She was born and raised in New York State and graduated from Canisius College in Buffalo. She majored in Animal Behavior, Ecology, & Conservation and in Biology, with a minor in Anthrozoology. She was heavily involved in a beluga whale research team, as well as Canisius Ambassadors for Conservation.

In her free time, she enjoys playing with dogs, and birding, and can't get enough of the water. Most of all, she can’t wait to get out on the boat and inspire the public to love wildlife as much as she does.

Kayak Guide and Whale Watch Naturalist
Brendan

Returning for 2nd Season – Brendan grew up in Seattle, but was never far from wilderness and birds. At an early age he became passionate about ornithology but, was always a general naturalist at heart.

He’s worked all over the western US as a field biologist. After graduating with a degree in biology, he realized that he enjoyed sharing his passion more than working in a lab. He started guiding, writing, and taking photos.

Brendan lives to explore biodiversity through international travel, but always enjoys coming home to the Pacific Northwest. As it turns out he likes baking bread, growing vegetables, and enjoying the outdoors in the San Juans via boat, bike, or foot as much as exploring Bornean rainforests.

Whale Watch Captain
Jim

Jim returns for his fourth season at San Juan Safaris; a USCG Licensed Master Captain. He has captained boats in diverse areas, from Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks to South Padre Island and the Gulf of Mexico.

Jim and wife, Joan, retired early from a professional photography career to travel and work boat jobs in (his words), "Great locations at the best times." "We love the San Juans and all the wonders they offer!" When they occasionally make it home to the Tropical Tip of Texas, they spend their days dolphin watching.
They have cruised their own boat, "on all three coasts," but the San Juan Islands keep calling them back.

Jim is also an author; the book is titled Cat On A Leash, and is the true tale of boat cruising from the Pacific Northwest to the Florida Keys and more, along with their furry family member.

When not driving a boat, you are likely to find him on a kayak or a motorcycle.

Joan

Wife of Captain Jim (see above). They have worked together all their adult lives and have no intention of changing that in their "second careers." Joan was previously the marina retail manager in the Tetons and the woman who ran the place for over 30 years in their imaging business. "I enjoy helping people have fun!"

If not at the desk here at San Juan Safaris or out on boats, you will find Joan on their own boat or paddling her kayak. Or, cuddling with "the cutest cat on the planet." Ask her sometime about fast sailing on their trimaran or long-distance motorcycling on her own dresser. "We didn't retire from our "real jobs" to slow down. We love to travel and be in our favorite places at the best times. That's why we're here!"

Karen

1st Season - Karen was born and raised in Maryland, and grew familiar with the Atlantic in the summers on the state’s eastern shore and family trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. But visiting grandma in Michigan was what lead her to appreciate the stillness and capacity of the Great Lakes.
After graduating with degrees in sociology and creative writing, she tried something different and found home in the mountainous Vermont. Two good years there lead her to travel elsewhere with interest in people and culture, where she spent some time exploring the U.S. before and after six months in Asia.

She is currently studying her Masters in poetry, and finds solace in the arts, her yoga practice, and long walks through the woods.

1st Season - Mike comes from the East: he grew up in Upstate New York and gained a love for the outdoors and the ocean through summers on the outer banks of North Carolina, the Adirondack mountains of New York, and SCUBA diving in the Atlantic ocean.

Since graduating he has pursued his passions as a naturalist and worked with spectacular marine mammals in Alaska, Hawaii and Maine. He is incredibly excited to explore the San Juans and share his passions with you!
