Getting to San Juan Island is Half the Fun!
Below is a map of the Seattle area to the town of Anacortes (gateway to the San Juans), where one takes the ferry to San Juan Island. Allow about 90 minutes driving time from Seattle to Anacortes.
The Washinton State ferry lands in Friday Harbor, which is on the east side of San Juan Island.
Anacortes is where one would take the ferry to come across to all the San Juan Islands.
The ferry ride from Anacortes to San Juan Island (Friday Harbor) is approximately 1 hour.
Directions from Seattle: Take hiway 90 going north. Get off at the Anacortes exit. Drive on that road (#20) right into the little town of Anacortes. Keep on eye out for signs that say SAN JUAN ISLAND FERRY - where you will turn left.
Take that road until you see the next sign FERRY - turn right. into the ferry terminal. You will need to drive up to the booth if you are bringing your car. I you are a walk on passeger, stay to the left and find a parking spot.
Tips to taking the Friday Harbor San Juan Island ferry
•If you are planning on bringing you car, truck or RV, be sure to RESERVE A Ferry Space on the San Juan Island Ferry
• If you do not have a reservation for your vehicle arrive one hour prior - EXECPT June, July and August arrive 1.5 hours prior to the departure time.
• If you are a walk-on passenger, arrive one hour prior to park your vehicle and purchase a pedistrian ferry ticket. You do not need and cannot make a reservation for a pedistrian.

There is generally plenty of parking. If this is a day trip and not an over night trip, we reccomend parking your car for the day in Anacortes (about $15) and be a walk on passenger (about $15 ROUND TRIP). The ferry lands in the sweet and walkable village of Friday Harbor.
